Before the season begins here is a preview of the most important non-conference games that could build or destroy a resume for teams that have realistic playoff hopes.
Week 1
Auburn v. Oregon
It seems anyone that follows College Football has Oregon as a Pre-season top 15 team going into the 2019 season. If Oregon and Justin Herbert can have a strong performance against the projected Top 25 Auburn Tigers Week 1 they might have a real shot to make the playoffs since their remaining schedule will be in the diminished PAC-12.
Week 2
Texas A&M v. Clemson
The returning National Champions have to face an up and coming Texas A&M team led by coach Jimbo Fisher. The Aggies came close to upsetting Clemson in 2018 and will be looking to gain respect as one of the nations premier programs with a win. On the flip side a Clemson win will most likely be able to point to A&M at the end of the season as a quality win.
LSU v. Texas
Both teams had strong seasons in 2018 each winning their bowl games and ending in the Top 10 rankings. This year both teams are going to be eager to prove themselves early in the season with a quality win.
Army v. Michigan
For most fans Army’s 2018 campaign of going 11-2, winning their bowl game and almost upsetting the Sooners in Norman was surprising. The black knights will look to continue to build on last season and wreck havoc on Michigan’s playoffs hopes.
Week 4
Notre Dame v. Georgia
Notre Dame hopes to make the playoffs again after an underwhelming experience in 2018. Georgia barely missed the playoffs last year but had a disappointing bowl performance against Texas. This early season game could be a huge resume booster for whoever wins.
Week 9
Notre Dame v. Michigan
Late into the season both teams could still potentially have a chance to make the playoffs and could help their favor with the committee if a game went wrong earlier in the season.
